BUY WITH CONFIDENCE

Choosing a used sailing yacht takes more than comparing year and length

On a sailing yacht, equipment that barely exists on a motor boat can represent a substantial share of future cost. It therefore makes sense to separate structural condition, rig, systems and equipment before judging the asking price.

01

Intended use

Coastal cruising, offshore passages, living aboard, racing or weekend sailing call for very different layouts and equipment.

02

Rig and sails

The age and condition of standing and running rigging, sails, furlers, winches and deck hardware can materially change the post-purchase budget.

03

Hull, keel and rudder

Check joints, impacts, repairs, moisture, possible signs of osmosis and any relevant structural history.

04

Engine and systems

The auxiliary engine, cooling, transmission, batteries, chargers, pumps, electronics and water systems should work under real operating conditions.

PRE-PURCHASE INSPECTION

What deserves particular attention on a used sailing yacht

Standing rigging

Age, terminals, turnbuckles, shrouds, forestay, chainplates and replacement records where available.

Mast and sail handling

Mast, boom, fittings, furlers, winches, blocks, lines, tracks and load-bearing points.

Sails

Mainsail, genoa, jibs, spinnaker or gennaker: cloth, stitching, UV protection, shape and repairs.

Deck and watertightness

Deck surface, teak or synthetic decking, stanchions, portlights, hatches, leaks and moisture around fittings.

Keel, rudder and underwater body

Keel-to-hull joint, bolts where accessible, rudder, play, antifouling and underwater condition during haul-out.

Auxiliary engine

Cold start, smoke, temperature, cooling, transmission, shaft or saildrive, leaks and documented maintenance.

BY LENGTH

Size changes both the sailing experience and the cost of ownership

Length affects more than interior volume. It also changes sail area, loads, rig and sail sizes, berth and haul-out costs, maintenance and how easily the yacht can be handled with a small crew.

30–35 ftManageable cruising and manageable running costs.
36–42 ftA common balance between space and handling.
43–50 ftMore volume, autonomy and onboard systems.
50+ ftGreater handling, maintenance and infrastructure demands.

PROCESS

How to buy a used sailing yacht

  1. 1

    Define your sailing programme

Area, crew size, time aboard, experience, budget and autonomy requirements.

  2. 2

    Compare like with like

Year and price are only the starting point: rig, sails, engine, deck, electronics, history and recent work matter greatly.

  3. 3

    Viewing and checks

Visual and functional inspection, available documentation and specific questions about maintenance, groundings, haul-outs and rig replacement.

  4. 4

    Sea trial and survey

Where appropriate, test both engine and sail handling and arrange an independent survey with haul-out.

  5. 5

    Contract and ownership transfer

Agree price and conditions, review documentation and coordinate payment, ownership transfer, insurance and handover.

OWNERS

Do you have a sailing yacht to sell?

A good sailing-yacht listing should clearly explain the rig, sails, handling equipment, engine, electronics, maintenance and upgrades. Rig replacement, deck work, haul-outs and relevant invoices are especially useful to document.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions when buying a used sailing yacht

What matters most when inspecting a used sailing yacht?

In addition to the hull and general systems, the rig, standing rigging, sails, keel, rudder, deck watertightness and auxiliary engine deserve specific attention.

Does standing rigging have to be replaced at a fixed age?

There is no single number that applies to every yacht. Material, use, environment, installation, inspections and manufacturer or insurer guidance all matter. Age, history and actual condition should be established.

Is haul-out essential?

For a significant purchase, haul-out allows the underwater body, keel, rudder, propeller, shaft or saildrive to be inspected properly. The exact scope depends on the transaction.

Should the sea trial include sailing?

Whenever practical, yes. It helps assess sail handling, furlers, winches, autopilot, rig behaviour and systems under way, as well as the engine.

Can Fontnautic help if the yacht is not in its own listings?

Yes. We can assess a search, compare boats, arrange viewings and coordinate survey, documentation and other steps where appropriate.
