What is checked in a pre-purchase inspection?
The scope may include hull and structure, deck, engines, propulsion, electrical systems, electronics, installations, safety equipment, documentation, sea trial and haul-out.
BOAT INSPECTION
Boat surveys and inspections to understand a vessel’s actual condition and identify defects, errors, issues and risks before making a decision.
Request an inspectionA boat inspection or survey assesses the actual condition of a boat to identify defects, issues, repairs, outstanding maintenance and risks within the agreed scope.
Buyers who need to know a boat’s condition and owners who want to understand its condition before selling or repairing it.

No. Its purpose is to reduce uncertainty about the observed condition and provide technical information for the decision; it cannot eliminate all future risk.
BOAT CONDITION REVIEW
An inspection turns a first impression into specific questions, observations and priorities.
On a used boat, many things do not appear in the advert: corrosion, damp, modified installations, leaks, exhausted batteries, overdue maintenance, incomplete documentation or repairs that deserve closer understanding.
Fontnautic coordinates surveys and inspections adapted to the client’s objective. The scope may be a full pre-purchase inspection, a condition review before selling, a post-purchase check or a reinspection after a repair.
A survey is not a promise that no defect exists. It is a methodical review designed to find errors and issues, check systems within the agreed scope and make clear the boat’s condition and the points requiring attention.
WHEN IT MAKES SENSE
Before inspecting a boat, we need to know what decision the inspection should help you make. That defines the depth, specialists, sea trial, haul-out and documentation required.
To understand the boat’s condition, identify defects or issues and decide whether to proceed, negotiate, request a specialist review or walk away from the transaction.
To create a baseline of condition and organise maintenance, urgent actions, upgrades and work that can be scheduled calmly.
To identify issues that could arise during a viewing or survey and decide which are worth resolving before putting the boat on the market.
To visually check the result of work carried out, verify operation where appropriate and confirm whether any issues remain outstanding.
WHAT WE CAN INSPECT
The exact scope is agreed before the inspection. Some components require specialists, diagnostics or specific equipment, which are coordinated when they genuinely add value.
Visible condition of the hull, gelcoat or paint, joints, accessible bulkheads, reinforcements, signs of repair, impacts, moisture or deformation deserving further investigation.
Fittings, windows, hatches, seals, teak, guardrails, anchor fittings, windlass, passerelle and components exposed to water, sun and loads.
General condition, leaks, corrosion, mounts, hoses, cooling, fuel, exhaust, filters, levels, visible maintenance and consistency with the information provided.
Shafts, sterndrives, IPS/pods, propellers, rudders, power steering, transmissions and signs of vibration, play or overdue maintenance.
Batteries, chargers, inverters, panels, visible wiring, protection devices, connections, corrosion and operation of accessible circuits.
Chartplotter, radar, sounder, AIS, VHF, autopilot, instrumentation and other equipment that can be checked during the viewing or underway.
Pumps, tanks, bilges, sanitation, fresh water, water heater, hydraulic circuits and signs of leaks or irregular operation.
Generator, climate control, refrigeration, galley, appliances, passerelle, platform, windlasses and other systems relevant to the boat’s actual use.
Presence and apparent condition of safety equipment, signage and installed items, without replacing any statutory inspections or certifications that may apply.
Consistency between available documents, engines, modifications, invoices, inspections and the information provided by the owner or seller about the boat.
SEA TRIAL AND HAUL-OUT
A sea trial can reveal starting behaviour, temperatures, smoke, acceleration, cruising rpm, vibration, steering, trim, alarms and the operation of certain systems under load.
A haul-out provides access to the underwater hull, propellers, shafts, sterndrives, rudders, seacocks, anodes and areas that cannot be properly assessed with the boat afloat.
Not every inspection includes a sea trial or haul-out. The decision depends on the objective, value of the transaction and the depth the client requires.
SURVEY, VALUATION & ITB
The survey mainly answers “what condition is the boat in?”. The valuation mainly answers “what is it worth?”. The statutory inspection answers a regulatory requirement.
A technical review aimed at identifying defects, errors, issues, repairs, overdue maintenance and risks. It may include hull, engines, systems, sea trial and haul-out depending on scope.
When you need to know or substantiate a vessel’s value, we coordinate a valuation or appraisal aimed at determining and documenting its technical and economic value.
View surveys and valuations →The statutory inspection required by regulation must be carried out by an authorised body. Our private inspection does not replace that obligation.
Documentation and registration →HOW WE APPROACH IT
The more information we have beforehand, the more time during the visit can be devoted to checking what matters rather than discovering basic facts as we go.
Purchase, sale, condition review, post-purchase, repair or a specific concern. We define which decision the inspection needs to support.
Model, year, engines, hours, history, documentation, adverts, photographs, known issues and recent work.
What will be checked, whether a sea trial is advisable, whether a haul-out is needed and which additional specialists may be required.
A methodical walk-through of the boat, functional checks within scope and recording of issues or questions.
We organise what has been observed: defects, issues, overdue maintenance, recommended specialist checks and points relevant to negotiation or the decision on the boat.
A SNAPSHOT IN TIME
Internal components, intermittent faults and hidden defects may not be revealed by a visual or functional inspection. When a specific sign appears, we therefore recommend going deeper with the appropriate specialist or test.
An engine may require official diagnostics, a hull moisture readings, an electrical installation specific tests or a structure assessment by a qualified technician.
Good judgement also means knowing when to stop looking and start measuring.
BEFORE BUYING A BOAT
A clear history, invoices, consistent explanations and a boat that responds well to checks build confidence. Inconsistencies do not always indicate a serious problem, but they do show where further investigation is needed.
How to buy with FontnauticBOAT INSPECTION IN SPAIN
Coverage depends on location, type of boat, depth of inspection and availability of the right professionals. We can assess work across mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.
Where a physical inspection is required, we first check access, haul-out options and the appropriate surveyor or specialist available near the boat.
MARINE SURVEY COST
The cost of a pre-purchase boat survey depends on length, complexity, location and scope. A visual inspection afloat is not equivalent to a survey covering documentation, engines, onboard systems, sea trial, haul-out and a written report.
Haul-out, travel lift or time ashore are usually marina or boatyard services and may be charged separately. Additional specialists may also be appropriate for engine diagnostics, oil analysis, electronics, moisture readings, rigging or another specific test.
A boat inspection should define in advance what is being checked and what remains outside scope. The aim is not to collect as many tests as possible, but to obtain useful evidence for deciding, negotiating or requesting a specialist review.
PRE-PURCHASE SCOPE
Accessible hull, deck, interior, machinery spaces, installations and system operation within the agreed scope.
Engines under load, temperatures, vibration, steering, alarms, behaviour and systems that can only be assessed underway.
Underwater hull, propellers, shafts, sterndrives, rudders, anodes, seacocks and other submerged components.
Engine diagnostics, oil analysis, rigging, moisture or other tests when there is a technical reason to extend the survey.
BEFORE THE SURVEY
Ownership, vessel identification, available certificates and the administrative status of the boat.
Invoices, engine hours, engine services, haul-outs, repairs and significant work.
Recent faults, water ingress, impacts, replacements or systems that are not operational.
Availability of skipper, fuel, boatyard and enough time to complete the agreed survey scope.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The scope is defined for each boat and objective. These answers explain how we approach the service.
The scope is adapted to the boat and the objective. It may include hull and accessible structure, deck, engines, propulsion, electrical systems, electronics, water and fuel systems, safety, documentation and functional checks.
An inspection or survey is intended to establish the boat’s actual condition and identify defects, errors, issues, overdue maintenance or risks. An appraisal or valuation has a different objective: to determine and document the boat’s technical and economic value.
No. Fontnautic’s private inspection does not replace statutory inspections applicable to the vessel or its navigation certificate. Any required ITB inspections must be carried out by authorised bodies under the applicable rules.
For a used-boat purchase, an inspection can provide substantial information before committing to the transaction. Depending on the boat’s value, age, condition and complexity, it may then be reasonable to extend the review with a sea trial, haul-out, specialist mechanic or independent surveyor.
Not necessarily. It can be included when it adds value and can be arranged. A sea trial allows engines, temperatures, vibration, steering, alarms and certain systems to be observed under load.
It depends on the objective. A haul-out allows the underwater hull, propellers, shafts, sterndrives, rudders, anodes and seacocks to be reviewed. It may not be necessary for an initial check; for a deeper pre-purchase survey it is often worth considering.
We can carry out visual and functional checks within the agreed scope. Where there are symptoms, high-value engines or the buyer needs greater depth, it may be advisable to coordinate diagnostics, analysis or inspection with a mechanic or authorised service centre.
We can identify signs that justify deeper investigation. Moisture readings, thermography or other specific tests depend on the material, boat condition and equipment required, and may need a specialist technician or surveyor.
There is no single duration. It depends on length, complexity, accessibility, scope, sea trial, haul-out and the number of systems to be checked. The time is defined when the service is planned.
The form of delivery depends on the contracted scope. A survey can document observations and defects identified. If what you need is an appraisal or economic valuation of the boat, that is treated as a separate valuation instruction.
Yes. We can plan a reinspection or check of the completed work within the possible scope and, where the repair requires it, coordinate the appropriate technician or specialist.
We can assess inspections across mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. Specific availability depends on the boat, location, scope and professionals required.
