WHAT IT SOLVES

Marine surveys and boat valuations determine and document a reasoned technical and economic value based on condition, equipment, history, market and the purpose of the assignment.

WHO IT IS FOR

Owners, buyers or other parties who need to know what a boat is worth and justify that value.

How is a boat’s market value assessed?

Comparable boats are studied and the analysis is then adjusted to the specific unit: year, engines, hours, condition, equipment, history, refit, documentation and location.

Is the asking price the same as market value?

No. An advert expresses a seller’s expectation; a valuation should justify the figure using market evidence and the characteristics of the specific boat.

BOAT VALUATION

Asking price, sale price and market value are not necessarily the same thing.

A valuation seeks to answer one specific question: what value can reasonably be supported for this boat, on this date and for this purpose?

A serious valuation is not a matter of finding three adverts and taking an average. It requires understanding which boats are genuinely comparable and how condition, engines, hours, maintenance, equipment, taxes, location, history and completed work differ.

The same model can vary significantly in value between a maintained, documented and updated boat and one with a backlog of work.

Fontnautic coordinates the valuation with the professional appropriate to the type of report the client requires.

WHY DO YOU NEED THE VALUATION?

The purpose changes the type of report that should be prepared.

Wanting to know at what price to market a boat is not the same as needing a valuation for a lender, insurer or asset-related procedure.

01

Purchase & sale

Establish a defensible value range before buying, selling or negotiating a boat.

02

Going to market

Set a realistic pricing strategy taking the market, condition and characteristics of the boat into account.

03

Insurance

Document the vessel’s value where a policy, renewal or insurance situation requires a professional valuation.

04

Finance

Provide a valuation where a financial transaction needs the asset’s current value, subject to the institution’s requirements.

05

Inheritance or succession

Determine a reference value for inventories, awards or division of assets, using the type of report appropriate to the purpose.

06

Separation or division of assets

Value the boat when it forms part of assets that need to be quantified or divided between different parties.

07

Company or accounting

Value a marine asset where a company, corporate transaction or asset-management decision needs a documented economic reference.

08

Expert-report proceedings

Where the purpose is judicial, insurance-related or contentious, the instruction is defined and a professional with qualifications appropriate to the intended use is selected.

HOW VALUE IS BUILT

The market is the starting point. The specific boat is what ultimately explains the figure.

Two boats of the same model can share the same year and engines yet still justify different values.

A professional valuation studies available market data and adjusts it to the reality of the boat being valued.

We are not looking for a figure that pleases one party. We are looking for a figure that can be reasoned and supported.

WHAT AFFECTS VALUE

The year is only one line on the specification sheet.

The weight of each factor changes with the type, age and market of the boat, but these are some of the elements that are commonly relevant.

01

Make, model and market

Current demand, boats available, model reputation, liquidity and behaviour of the comparable market.

02

Year and age

Age of hull and systems, interpreted alongside maintenance, updates and current condition.

03

Engines and hours

Engine installation, configuration, hours, history, major servicing, repairs and foreseeable costs.

04

Overall condition

Hull, deck, interiors, engine room, installations and the level of condition observed or documented.

05

Equipment

Electronics, generator, climate control, stabilisers, tenders, navigation equipment and other extras with genuine market value.

06

Refit & upgrades

Recent work can add value, but not necessarily euro for euro. What was done, how, when and whether it can be evidenced all matter.

07

History and documentation

Invoices, traceability, ownership history, technical documentation, registry status and consistency of the boat’s history.

08

Location and taxation

Geographic market, documented tax status, flag, delivery costs and the practical ease of transferring or using the vessel.

MARKET COMPARABLES

Not every advert is comparable. And an advert alone does not prove a sale price.

To value a boat correctly, comparables must be filtered by model, year, engines, location, condition, taxes, equipment and context. A boat advertised for months at a certain price does not mean the market is completing transactions at that figure.

Where actual transaction data, market history and brokerage experience are available, they can add context to public asking prices.

REFIT AND MAINTENANCE

Investing €100,000 in a boat does not automatically mean it is worth €100,000 more.

Some upgrades recover a significant part of their cost because they address obsolescence, improve reliability or bring the boat closer to the standard expected by its market.

Other expenditure is personal, cosmetic or simply maintenance that prevents depreciation but does not create an equivalent increase in value.

That is why we distinguish between cost invested, necessary maintenance and the value recognised by the market.

VALUATION AND INSPECTION

Condition can influence value, but the purpose of each service remains different.

A valuer may need to observe condition in order to justify a valuation. That does not automatically turn the valuation into a full pre-purchase survey.

If what you need is to look for defects, review systems and understand technical condition before buying, that service is our Inspection / Survey.

HOW IT IS APPROACHED

First the purpose. Then the method.

Before quoting or issuing a valuation, we need to know what it will be used for. That determines the depth, documentation, visit, valuation date and professional who should be involved.

  1. 01

    Define the purpose

Sale, purchase, insurance, finance, inheritance, division of assets, company, expert proceedings or another need.

  2. 02

    Identify the boat

Make, model, year, construction, engines, hours, flag, registration, equipment and available documentation.

  3. 03

    Gather market information

Comparable boats, current supply, available market history and the specific context of the model or segment.

  4. 04

    Assess the specific boat

Condition, maintenance, refit, upgrades, documentation, engines, equipment and factors that justify adjustments against comparables.

  5. 05

    Issue the appropriate valuation

The format and depth of the document are adapted to the agreed purpose and the professional who must sign or issue it.

THE REPORT

A figure without an explanation has little value when somebody challenges it.

A good valuation should make clear which boat was valued, on what date, for what purpose and which criteria were used.

Depending on the instruction, it may include identification, documentation reviewed, technical characteristics, photographs, observed condition, comparables, adjustments, methodology and value conclusion.

The purpose must be stated before work begins. A report intended to guide a sale price should not later be presented as though it had been commissioned for judicial or financing purposes.

BOAT VALUATION IN SPAIN

We can assess valuations across mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.

The need for travel depends on the purpose, boat and documentation available. Certain reports will require a physical inspection; for other preliminary studies there may be enough information to define the scope first.

For valuations that require a physical visit, we coordinate the appropriate professional according to the boat’s location, purpose of the report and available documentation.

BOAT VALUATION COST

How much does a boat or yacht valuation cost?

The price of a boat valuation depends on its purpose, the size and complexity of the boat, location, available documentation and whether the assignment requires a physical inspection, comparable-market research or a more formal written report.

Setting an informed market value does not involve the same work as preparing a valuation for insurance, finance, asset reporting or a process where the figure may be challenged by third parties. The purpose should be clear before scope and quotation are agreed.

Market evidence provides reference points, but the actual yacht explains the final figure: engines, hours, condition, maintenance, equipment, tax position, location, history and quality of a refit can create substantial differences between two boats of the same model.

If the main question is technical condition and defects before purchase, the correct service is a pre-purchase boat survey.

Define the question first. Then define the specialist, checks and report format the assignment requires.

VALUATION OR SURVEY

Related terms, but different assignments and decisions.

Boat valuation

Establishes and explains a value for a defined purpose, date and level of evidence.

Appraisal

Uses market evidence, comparable boats and the characteristics of the subject vessel to support a defensible figure.

Pre-purchase survey

Examines technical condition, defects and risk before buying; it is not a substitute for an economic valuation.

Formal report

Insurance, finance, legal or disputed uses should be declared at the start so the appropriate specialist and scope can be selected.

COMPARABLE BOATS

How to compare a boat with the market without mixing non-comparable examples.

Model & generation

Viewsions, build years and engine changes can materially alter the comparison.

Taxes & location

Tax and geographic context affect the price at which a boat can realistically compete.

Condition & maintenance

A documented refit and coherent service history are not valued in the same way as deferred work.

Equipment

Useful options can differentiate boats, but do not always recover their installation cost.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions about boat valuation and marine appraisal

The purpose of the report determines the professional involved, the scope and the documentation required.

01What is the difference between a survey and a valuation or appraisal?

A survey or inspection seeks to establish the boat’s actual condition and identify defects, issues or risks. A valuation or appraisal has a different objective: to determine and document what the boat is worth for a specific purpose.

02How is a boat’s value calculated?

Comparable boats are studied and the analysis is adjusted to the individual vessel: make, model, year, engines, hours, condition, maintenance, equipment, refit, documentation, location, tax status and market context.

03Can advertised prices be used to value a boat?

They are a source of information, but should not automatically be treated as completed sale prices. Comparables need to be filtered and differences in condition, equipment, location, tax status and other factors analysed.

04Does a refit investment increase the boat’s value by the same amount?

Not necessarily. Some investments clearly improve market appeal and value; others are necessary maintenance or personal upgrades. The valuation considers how much of that investment the market actually recognises.

05Can I request a valuation before putting the boat on the market?

Yes. It can help establish a defensible price range and avoid entering the market far above or below the reality of the individual boat.

06Can the valuation be used for insurance?

A valuation can be prepared for insurance purposes, but that purpose should be stated from the outset because the insurer may require a particular format, report age or professional.

07Can a valuation be used to apply for finance?

It may be necessary or useful in certain financing transactions. The exact requirements depend on the institution, so they should be known before the report is commissioned.

08Can you provide a valuation for inheritance or division of assets?

We can coordinate valuations for inventories, succession, separation or other divisions of assets. The purpose should be defined beforehand so the appropriate report type and professional are used.

09Is a valuation automatically suitable for court proceedings?

It should not be assumed. If the report will be used in court, it must be planned from the outset for that purpose and commissioned from the appropriate professional with the corresponding scope and requirements.

10Does the boat need to be physically inspected for a valuation?

It depends on the purpose and depth required. In many professional valuations, a visit provides important information about condition and equipment. A preliminary market study can be carried out from documentation, but should not be confused with a full valuation where the instruction requires a physical inspection.

11What documentation helps with a valuation?

Specification sheet, registry documents, engine details and hours, inventory, maintenance or refit invoices, history, photographs and any information that helps distinguish the boat from comparable examples.

12Do you work throughout Spain?

We can assess valuations across mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. Travel requirements and specific availability depend on the boat, purpose of the report and professional required.

WHAT DO YOU NEED VALUED?

Tell us which boat it is and why you need to know its value.

With the model, year, location, purpose and available documentation, we can begin defining the type of valuation and the appropriate professional.
